Alpana (Bengali: আলপনা) refers to colorful motifs or sacred art done with hands and paint on auspicious occasions in Bengal. Traditionally, it was drawn by the women of the house before sunset.

- Place Alpana incense sticks near open window for a quick 30 minute burn with smells that will linger for up to 1 1/2 hours.

- Place in a ventilated room for a 45 minute slow-burn time and a smell trail that could last up to 4 hours.

Regular incense is made with essential oils blended with a chemical diluent known as Dipropelyne Glycol (DPG), generally considered safe for skin application. The effects of burning this chemical and inhaling the fumes are not known.

However, it is clear that it has an underlying odor of its own ranging from sour to burnt plastic. These bad odors released by DPG linger for hours after the burn is over, giving incense a bad reputation for being 'pungent'.
